South Korea were drawn alongside two-time World Cup winners Argentina, 2004 European Champions Greece and African side Nigeria in the 2010 World Cup Finals draw in South Africa on Friday, giving Huh Jung-moo’s side a real opportunity to reach the last sixteen of the tournament for only the second time.
Although drawn with some traditionally strong opponents, recent form suggests that South Korea could stand a good chance of advancing from the group stages for the first time on foreign soil. Argentina will start the group as top seeds and heavy favourites, but the South Americans struggled in qualifying under the leadership of Diego Maradona and much will depend on him resolving the issues surrounding the team ahead of the tournament. With a squad full of talented players such as Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez, they will be the team to beat in Group B.
Nigeria have struggled to make an impact at the World Cup since reaching the second round in both 1994 and 1998. In 2002 they exited at the group stage, where they faced Argentina, Sweden and England, and then failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. They had to wait until the final round of qualifying matches to book their spot in South Africa thanks to a 3-2 win over Kenya.
Greece emerged victorious at the 2004 European Championships but since then have failed to make much of an impact. They failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, exited Euro 2008 at the group stage and finished runners-up to Switzerland in qualifying for 2010, eventually overcoming Ukraine 1-0 in the playoffs.
Korea will face Greece in their opening match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on June 12th before taking on Argentina at Johannesburg’s Soccer City on June 17th. The final group match against Nigeria will take place on June 22nd at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium. If Korea were to progress from Group B, they would meet opposition from Group A consisting of South Africa, Mexico. Uruguay and France. As Korea Republic National football team has recently qualified for its eighth World Cup finals by qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
